Originally, the Pittsburgh Crawfords team was composed of amateurs from the sandlots of the city’s Hill district. Later, they became one of the most formidable and dominating teams of the mid-1930s.
They won the 1935 Negro National League championship with five future Hall of Famers: James "Cool Papa" Bell, Oscar Charleston, Josh Gibson, Judy Johnson, and the legendary Satchel Paige. In 1937, the team was dismantled by the raids of Dominican Republic dictator Gen. Rafael Truijillo.
